Though the challenges of the pandemic were numerous, we think it is more important to share how Wesley continued to care for residents, opened new buildings, began new programs, kept our team members and residents safer, reacted quickly to the ever changing environment and planned for the future. The Wesley: Fall 2019
This year, the Wesley family celebrated its 75th anniversary of incorporation. Each community held special celebrations for residents, staff, reservation list members and special guests. At Wesley Lea Hill, staff and residents held a party with a fun 1940’s theme that showcased live music and cars from the era, diner hamburgers, handmade ice cream malts, a photo booth and special 75th anniversary Coca Cola bottles….

In spring, we welcomed residents into their new homes at Wesley Bradley Park in Puyallup. A formal ribboncutting ceremony and grand opening celebration were held in August with residents, local dignitaries and friends. Wesley Bradley Park, our first campus in Pierce County, has been well received in the community. Wesley at Tehaleh, under development in Bonney Lake in Pierce County, is located in the master planned community of Tehaleh. We began construction in August 2019, and we anticipate opening in the spring of 2021….

The Lodge at Wesley Bradley Park opened its doors to welcome the first residents in April 2019. Nearly 50 apartments were occupied by the end of April, and another 50 or more will be occupied by the end of May. “It’s been a long time coming, but we finally made it,” said Wesley President and CEO Kevin Anderson. “We appreciate the patience of our Pioneers, donors and friends as well as the hard work that went into it by our development team: Absher Construction, InSite Architects and Senior Housing Partners….

The Wesley: Winter 2018
In 1944, Rev. Dr. Stanley Logan sought a solution to a widow’s search for a place to live so she wouldn’t have to impose on her children and grandchildren. His solution was Wesley Gardens. Wesley Gardens became Wesley Homes with the addition of The Terrace building in 1960. With the second building, a new name and brand was needed. This recognizable logo has been the Wesley Homes symbol for over 50 years….

The Wesley: Summer 2018
Wesley Des Moines has entered into a partnership with World Relief to provide temporary housing for nine people seeking refuge from their country of origin. Each participant at Wesley has been approved for sponsorship by World Relief and has full security clearance, permanent asylum residency status and work permits for the United States….

The Wesleys: Spring 2017
Emi Somekawa Beckwith and Ellen Mar “met” in 1944 at Tule Lake Segregation Center in California. The center was the largest of the 10 Japanese American internment camps in the U.S. created after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After being transferred from the Assembly Center in Portland, Oregon, Emi, a nurse, was assigned to work at the Tule Lake center’s hospital. “I was told I’d work at the hospital at the camp, but the hospital was too far away,” said Emi. “The camp had over 72 blocks. My parents were also too far away, so they couldn’t take care of my children while I was at work. Eventually, we moved close enough to make everything work out…

Reservation list members Mary Kholi and Ginny and Jim Christensen have eagerly chosen their Wesley Homes Bradley Park accommodations. Before making their decision, they got to know Wesley Homes. Mary has lived in Puyallup nearly 40 years. She’s worked for both the Colorado and Washington Cooperative Extension and has been active in her church, Relay for Life®, League of Women Voters® and social justice issues. Construction kicked off in the lobby of The Terrace with a new mail room at Wesley Homes Des Moines. The makeover will continue with the addition of a new bistro and library. A creative arts center and classroom will be added to accommodate the successful LIFE – Learning Is ForEver – program that offers classes and lectures on a regular basis. “Residents, staff and guests will be able to take advantage of the bistro,” said Wesley Homes Des Moines Executive Director Alex Candalla. “Our goal is to bring in the amenities that people want today….
